the naming game...

the naming game...

How in the world do you keep track of all those cows?

Do you name any of them?

(as I said I would be answering some customer questions in the weeks leading up to our Annual Harvest Pre-Sale...starting July 1st)

Jeff used to have a FAVORITE COW--her name was BETTY.

Betty would always let Jeff pet her and she had the most mild and sweet temperament.

She was also a great mother.

The funniest thing about Betty was that she actually would let Jeff ride her like a horse.

NO JOKE!

She was an anomaly.

Our cows are overall pretty nice and mellow but good luck trying to ride one of them. Haha.

Anyway, Betty was the only cow with a name. Everyone else is just identified by their eartag numbers.

Our cows have orange tags from #1 and up...

Each calf has the first digit match the year (so 4 for calves born in 2024) followed by their birth order.

First calf of the year is #401 and so on.

This year, we only have 5 beef with an ear tag starting with 2 (meaning they were born in 2022.

That means they will be over 2 years old when we harvest them...so they will be super big  and fat!

We are making sure that our first Beef Share customers get first crack at this very best beef when Deposits open up for our Annual Harvest Pre-Sale on July 1st.

In short, Yes, we name our cows but not with the alphabet. Just with numbers :-)
